Machining
The machining department includes horizontal and vertical lathes with C and Y axes, vertical machining centres and precision indexing horizontal machining centres.
01 — Machining
Machining after casting
The machining department is the stage where parts are machined after casting. The machine types in the department are listed below.
02 — Machine types
Machine types
The machine suited to the part is assessed using drawing and quantity information.
-
Lathes with C and Y axes
Horizontal and vertical lathes are available. In general, the C axis provides angular positioning of the spindle, and the Y axis provides linear movement of the tool perpendicular to the X axis.
-
Vertical machining centres
In vertical machining centres the spindle is in a vertical position.
-
Precision indexing horizontal machining centres
In horizontal machining centres the spindle is in a horizontal position. In general, an indexing table allows different faces of the part to be machined.

05 — FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which machine types are in the machining department?
The SYC Machining department has horizontal and vertical lathes with C and Y axes, vertical machining centres and precision indexing horizontal machining centres.
Within which tolerance range is machining carried out?
In the SYC Machining department the machining tolerance is determined by the drawing of the part; for cast iron parts, work is commonly carried out in the range of approximately IT7-IT9. You can send the drawing of your part with the quote form.
Can I have the parts you cast machined in the same company?
At SYC the foundry and machining are services offered within the same company; cast parts can be machined in-house. You can clarify the workflow suited to your part at the quotation stage.
What information is needed in a quote for machining?
On the SYC quote form, either a drawing attachment or a part description is enough. The machine selection is assessed using drawing and quantity information.
